Tallgrass Grows Green

Did You Know...

That making aluminum cans from old ones uses one twelfth of the energy to make them from raw materials!

The average American tosses 3 lbs of trash every day; this adds up to 63,000 full garbage trucks daily. To bury this trash, we would need to dig a hole the size of a football field 100 miles deep!

That 60-80% of our nation's trash can be recycled!

That styrofoam DOES NOT biodegrade and that it takes more than 500 years before any changes occur at all! Say "NO" to styrofoam. Carry your own to-go mug.

That we throw away 100 billion plastic bags every year. That can take up to 1000 years to decompose. Say "NO" to plastic bags and use reusable shopping bags.

That 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away every HOUR! Say "NO" to plastic bottles and carry your own to-go container.

That with the office paper we throw away in one year, we could build a 12 foot wall clear across the US!

That about 44 million newspapers are tossed in the trash each week!

That recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours.

That recycled paper uses 80% less water, 65% less energy, and produces 95% less air pollution than producing one newspaper made with non-recycled paper.

That a recycled ton of paper saves 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water, and the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gas.

That recycling creates jobs, strengthens the economy, and saves us money by reducing the amount we purchase and reusing the products we do purchase.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint measures the impact our human activities have on our environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced and measured in units of carbon dioxide. For more information on how to calculate your personal carbon footprint go to www.carbonfootprint.com.

How can we reduce our carbon footprint?

Reduce the number of things that need to be thrown away which reduces our landfill and the amount of materials which have to be quarried and mined. Throwing things away is a waste of energy and resources it takes to make the product.

Reuse products for as long as feasibly possible. How many times do you reuse your zip lock baggies?

Recycling is one of the easiest ways. Recycling uses less energy and produces less polution than making things from scratch.
